Born in 1971 in Bucharest, Romania, Dragos Calin began his studies in piano and music at the age of 4 with Prof. Mira Ghisoiu. By 1977 he was accepted into the School of Music "George Enescu" in Bucharest, the most famed pre-university music school in Romania. He developed his musical skills over a 12 year period at this school, under the direction of the following master teachers: Constantin Nitu, Dumitru Avakian, Viorica Platon, Erna Glantz, Andrei Podlacha, Ana-Motora Ionescu. During this early period he was awarded his first national and international prizes in Piano and Performance Competitions: "Cita di Stresa" and "Cita di Marsalla" in Italy. He also won the "National Competition for Performance of Romantic Music" and the "National Competition of the Schools of Music" in Romania. At the age of 20, Dragos Calin was accepted as a student of the Piano Departament, Faculty of Music Performance, at the National University of Music in Bucharest. His major teacher was Master Aurora Ienei, an outstanding and brilliant Romanian performer and a famed pedagogue. Dragos also studied piano classes of Prof. Dana Borsan, Prof. Viniciu Moroianu, conducting and musical forms with Prof. Constantin Bugeanu, one of the most well-known teachers in this field. Mr. Calin completed his piano studies under the distinguished guidance of Prof. Maria Fotino, a very prominent artist and personality well-known throughout all Europe. While still a student at the University, Dragos Calin took part, in many orchestral concerts in Bucharest and other cities of Romania. His recitals and concerts performed in Romania, Holland, Spain, Austria and Italy won high approval from music critics and the musical press and reviews. In 1996, he graduated and achieved his Diploma in Performance, with Major in Piano-solo, and in Piano-teaching. Immediately afterwards his performance and teaching career has grown rapidly and with great intensity. He was appointed as a full time Professor at the Piano Department of the National University of Music in Bucharest; in addition, he was invited to present master classes And Dragos was next accepted as a member of the prestigious musical association in Vienna, Austria, the Gesellschaft fur Musiktheater. Continuing his research in music, in 1995 he was accepted at another faculty: The Musicology Department at the National University of Music in Bucharest. There he achieved his progress under the direction of Dr. Grigore Constantinescu, President of the Union of Musical Critics and Musicologists in Romania. Prof. Constantinescu is also internationally known for his expertise in this field of study. Dragos develops his studies under the direction of other great masters, including Professors Vasile Iliut, Dan Buciu, Octavian Lazar-Cosma, Alexandru Leahu, Irina Odagescu, Dinu Ciocan, Theodor Tutuianu, Liana Alexandra, Valentina Sandu, Dan Dediu, Mihai Cosma, Antigona Radulescu, Christian Berger.
In an exceptional way, Dragos completed in 1999 a two year period of examinations in only one year, and he achieved the highest possible marks.
1999 was a very fruitful year for Dragos: He has graduated and achieved his Diploma with Major in Musicology but, he also was accepted to begin his doctoral studies under Prof. Dr. Alexandru Leahu. Dragos Calin decided on the following topic for his doctoral thesis: "The Musical Universe of Shakespeare". In addition to this, Dragos continued his career in piano, giving concerts and recitals in Romania and other countries. Soon, Dragos published his first book: "Music for Shakespeare", as he continued his pedagogical work, and he continued to teach piano and music history at the National University of Music. Moreover, he was appointed Vice President of The Center for Scientific Research of the same institution. In 2001 he delivered his doctoral thesis and then received the Doctor of Music and Musicology degree with Magna Cum Laude.
From 2002, Dragos Calin holds the position of Associate Professor of Piano at the Department of Music, Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
In 2005, Dragos came back at National University of Music from Bucharest where now he holds the position of Vice-Director of Teacher Training Department.
